映画の構想は 7年前、ある映画監督と、ある漫画家の会話から生まれた。その監督とは、現在ハリウッドを拠点に活躍する、『ルパン三世』『あずみ』、そしてジャン・ㇾノ主演『ドアマン』の北村龍平。そして漫画家は、その作風と世界観で熱狂的なフォロワーを持つ髙橋ツトム。お互いを「盟友」と呼ぶ 2人が「これはどうしても映画にしなければならない」と共鳴した物語が、髙橋の代表作『スカイハイ』のスピンオフ作品『天間荘の三姉妹』だ。
　　そこに、社会現象を巻き起こしたアニメーション映画『この世界の片隅に』のプロデューサー真木太郎と、NHK連続テレビ小説『エール』を手掛けた脚本家の嶋田うれ葉が加わり、映画化に向けて一気に動き出した。
　　物語の軸となる三姉妹の三女役には、『この世界の片隅に』の主人公・すずの声優として高い評価を得た、のん。次女役は、大河ドラマから、映画、舞台まで様々な作品で強烈な存在感を放つ門脇麦。長女役に、近年数多くの賞に輝き、役者としての表現力と存在感に大きな注目が集まる大島優子という実力派3人が顔をそろえた。そして、舞台は三ツ瀬という町の温泉旅館、天間荘。
　　映画が描くのは、いのち。ひとの生と死、たましい。家族や近しい人たちとのつながり。誰にとっても他人事ではないテーマを、あたたかく、力強く、時に観る者の心に問いかけながら、日常に寄り添う視線から見つめていく。
　　世界はコロナ禍や戦争に突入し、人の生き死にが身近に感じられる今、図らずも今まさに観るべきリアルなメッセージの作品が誕生した。

Director Ashley McKenzie’s blend of formalism and gritty realism does not fail to surprise and treats the audience to flashes of visual and conceptual poetry. Her cast is entirely composed of first-time actors who convincingly convey how unique every individual is, both in how they see the world and how they relate to others. Ziyin Zheng in the role of An graciously embodies a mix of idiosyncrasy and frankness that makes them an ideal confidante for Star (Sarah Walker). They have what it takes to be on the receiving end of the scrutinising gaze of Star, who sees through conventions and never ceases to be amazed at life’s bewildering events. Veering on slapstick, Walker’s performance will not go unnoticed.

These narratives are stored in songs and poems and live on beyond their inevitable endings, as Shakespeare’s titular sonnet 18 also suggests. In Mohammad Shawky Hassan’s metafictional essay, a female narrator who wishes to tell the story of a love between two men encounters a polyamorous chorus of lovers, and this oft-told tale is multiplied. In Club Scheherazade, there is no protagonist, and every song has various versions. Heteronormative dramaturgy is challenged polyphonically and across a range of media: lovers ask each other about threesomes, Grindr contacts and past dates. Pop clichés are twisted, heartache permeates the men’s singing, and poems by Wadih Saadeh are read out while a lover’s dirty laundry is aired. The narrator mischievously tries for a happy ending as her characters exit the story. “If pain could be forgotten through words,” we hear at one point, “no lover would ever have to walk away wounded.”

　　On February 2013, Haleem, born in Aleppo, Syria, plans to escape the civil war and go to Germany, where his sister lives, and later invite his family after being granted refugee status. During the transit in Korea, he is caught with a fake passport and denied entry. He is later sent to Turkey where he is denied entry again, ending up back in Korea. After staying in the deportation room in the Korean airport, he is sent to stay at a foreign shelter, when one day he hears of his son's death and goes into a violent rage, unable to handle the sad news. The lawyer in charge of his case continues to challenge his detention, and the Korean Ministry of Justice ends up canceling his Emergency Protective Order without notifying him. Haleem, who unintentionally stepped into unfamiliar Korean soil, finds himself working illegally at a construction site, where he meets Riyadh, an unregistered Arab resident. They comfort each other's pain and develop a father and son relationship. Haleem, who had saved money to bring in his family to Korea, spent all his hard- earned money paying off Riyadh's father's debts. With the help of Youssef, a Christian Arab, Haleem gets a job at a junkyard and a place to stay. But Riyadh gets into a serious accident and is pronounced brain dead after he is chased by immigration officers. The church elders and ministers plot to use Riyadh's organs for their church main elder's transplant surgery. They try to persuade Haleem to concede by telling him that the church can bring his wife and daughter from the Turkish refugee camp to Korea along with their missionary group. Haleem falls into a religious conflict and moral dilemma, leading other Arabs around him to misunderstand him. A story about a person stuck in the midst of cultural, religious, ethnic, and national conflict.
